Stronger Families Across Generations brings together

the         Monash Interfaith Gathering (MIG Inc)                and

the Migrant Information Centre  (MIC) Eastern Melbourne

in a shared commitment to supporting and strengthening one of society’s most important institutions: the family.

Families are where foundations are laid, values are formed, identity is nurtured, and resilience is built.

For many migrant families, these foundations are shaped by the opportunities and challenges of navigating different cultures,

generations and life experiences while striving to maintain connection, belonging and hope.

Through faith perspectives, lived experience, practical wisdom and information about available support services,

this event explores both the inner strengths that sustain families and the outer supports that help them thrive.

It seeks to inspire hope, strengthen family harmony, and equip participants with tools to build safe, connected and resilient relationships across generations.

The program features:

Rev. Sylvia Akauola–Tongotongo speaking on Family: The Archetype of Unity in Diversity.

Shyama Fuad presenting True Families: Islamic Values that Nurture Deeper Relationships.

Venerable Phra Ajahn Tanee (presented by Nid Dickinson) sharing a Buddhist perspective on Family Mindfulness.

Deborah Sugirthakumar, award-winning author of Raising Resilient Families, exploring how families can build resilience, strengthen relationships, and recognise when everyday conflict becomes harmful.

Through storytelling, reflection and practical strategies, participants will gain insights into respectful communication, emotional literacy, accountability, mindfulness and community connection.

NAIDOC Week Book Club

A very full room of guests enjoyed our NAIDOC Week event at Wheelers Hill Library.

We enjoyed a welcome to country, a smoking ceremony with Uncle Chris,

who explained the ceremony thoroughly and also presented a talk about possum skin cloaks, 

tools and weapons, Performances from Yeng Gali choir, and two book reviews. 

And together, we sang:

“We are one, but we are many And from all the lands on earth we come.
We share a dream and sing with one voice I am, you are, we are Australian.”

• The Event started at 11.00 am with introduction by MC Kalid Amiri, followed by Vice-President Sithy Marikar reading the MIG Prayer.
• MIG Inc President 2025-27 gave his address looking at the MIG future challenges.

• Monash Council Deputy Mayor Cr. Elisha Lee gave a welcome address to the present and praised the MIG work over the year with the full support of the Monash Council members.
• MC Khalid then introduced an ice-breaker game where 7 guests participated also all guest participated, great fun for everyone.
• Then State LA member for Ashwood Mr. Matt Fregon in his address congratulated the important work of MIG over the last 20 years to keep peace, acceptance of all beliefs and harmony in the community.
• Event sponsor Migrants Agent: Minhaja Hashim addressed the guests and talked about the important work done by her agency to assist migrants, for visas and other legal needs.
• Former MIG Chair Joe Persico presented the MIG history with a detailed PowerPoint including dated, photos & video of events held over the 20 years.

• Founding Chairman of MIG Mr Jim Aylmer addressed the guests recalling that the initial work to establish MIG started in 2005 with Monash council assistance.

• Lunch was served between 1.00 and 2.00 pm during which a PowerPoint full of photos taken over the last 20years of events and activities done by MIG.
• After lunch, a short period of dancing followed.
• Finally, a very entertaining Magician show ran until the end.
• Thank you to the MIG Inc Executive team for a very well-organized event.

ABOUT OUR PRESENTERS

Sikhism Udaybir Singh, is a management consultant by profession and a dedicated volunteer from the Sikh community.

He is actively involved at Blackburn Sikh Gurudwara, he is the founder of Melbourne Singhs, a charity organization focused on promoting awareness of Sikh turbans and the values of Sewa (community service).

Over the past year, they have been providing support to families of sick children and nurses at Monash Children’s Hospital ICU with snacks to accompany their coffee.

Udaybir has also played a pivotal role in leading relief efforts with KhalsaAid during the Lismore floods and volunteered to distribute essential groceries and food supplies to families in need during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Married in accordance with the Sikh religion and father of two young boys, Udaybir will be presenting today on Anand Karaj, the sacred Sikh wedding ceremony.

Shinto Hanae Uemura is 27 years old. She was born in Kyoto, Japan. She has lived in Melbourne for about 5 years, was a student for 3 years, learning English and Early childhood education and care.

Hanae now works as an Early Childhood Educator.

Christianity Rev David Moffat was born in Perth, Western Australia, and attended school in the United Kingdom.

He completed a music degree at the University of Melbourne, and a diploma of education at Sydney University.

After teaching high school music for two years, he entered theological college and was ordained in 1997, serving churches in Birmingham (UK), and Canberra (Australia).

He married Pam in 1993, and they have three children, aged 26-30. David has been spiritual leader of Swedenborg Community Victoria since 2020.

In 2016, he was appointed President of the New Church in Australia and is currently the President of Monash Interfaith Gathering (MIG) and Mount Waverley & Chadstone Inter Church Council (MWCICC).
